Coffee Story:

This newest Indonesian offer on our menu is produced on family owned farms, located in the Takengon Highlands of the Aceh Province on the island of Sumatra. This region of Indonesia is also referred to as the Gayo Land, as these farmers belong to the Gayonese ethnic group. This area of the world is no stranger to periods of conflict. As a result, a high percentage of the farmers are widows whom lost their husbands during hostile times. Natural disasters also seem to impose monumental challenges nearly every decade. These occurrences complement the natural beauty surrounding Lake Tawa, and adds to mineral rich volcanic soils in which quality coffee needs to thrive. Despite these challenges, this cooperative has worked tirelessly on several improvements at both the farm and home level.

These producers are organized around the Koperasi Kopi Gayo Organic Cooperative that includes 1,500 members cultivating 2.5 acres of coffee on average. Being a part of a cooperative comes with both benefits and advantages. Technical assistance at the farm level for both mature coffee trees and coffee plant nurseries, while implementing best organic practices and environmental stewardship has been attainable with the assistance of Fair Trade premium dollars from the sale of their coffee. Other advantages that come with this coop membership is market access collaboration with PT IKA, which is a family owned export company located in Takengon, providing logistics and transport that is both reliable and timely. Micro loan credits have been available to aid in lean months and school scholarships for coop member’s children, are also benefits that have been noted by coop membership.

This coffee is roasted in both light and dark to appease all pallets for this rich, full bodied cup of coffee. Please refer to tasting notes above for a full description.
