Coffee Story:

Fresh crop arrivals from the birthplace of coffee, Ethiopia, is an awaited time here for us at Montana Coffee Traders. As we were cupping different offers we had to choose from, this coffee had us smiling from ear to ear. We were not just the only ones whom felt this way either. This offer has been chosen by Royal Coffee (Oakland) to have a place in their recognized “Crown Jewel” line of exquisite coffees.

First, this coffee is grown in a respectful, sustainable manner with the aid of the forest canopy to keep the maturing of the coffee cherries at a steady and nourishing pace. The coffee cherries are only harvested at their peak ripeness and immediately delivered to the nearest coffee washing station. As noted above in the “coffee details”, you will see this coffee has been “double washed”. Some washing stations in Ethiopia, commonly employ a secondary underwater soak after fermentation, sometimes referred to as “double washing”. Not only does this help remove any leftover pulp on the seeds, it also triggers the seed to begin germinating and it’s speculated this can improve overall flavor in the finished brewed beverage.

The Farmers contributing to this cup of black gold belong to the Haru Cooperative, in which there are about 1200 members. The Haru Cooperative has joined the YCFCU (Yirgacheffe Coffee Farmers’ Cooperative Union) which is an umbrella organization that aids in supporting the entire coffee supply chain affecting the Ethiopian coffee market. This support is channeled from farm and Coop level to wet mills, dry mills and to the exporter. This extra support in getting farmers coffee to market access has been an essential piece of the overall success of these hard working farmers. We are roasting this coffee in both light and dark as the coffee tastes delicious at both levels. Refer to tasting notes above for a full flavor description.
