Coffee Story:

We are ecstatic to finally have this offer back on our menu. We first tasted this honey process from our Monteverde partners, back in 2014 and 2015 and we are so happy to finally have it back on our menu again! The honey process methodology involves the fruit of the cherry being removed and the coffee is dried with mucilage still attached. Differing percentages of intact mucilage around the bean, gives way to a variety of flavors and mouthfeels that can be experienced. The method’s name is due to the golden, honey-like hue the coffee develops after drying in the sun for several days.

This coffee is carefully harvested when fully ripe with much attention put into the processing. Cafe Monteverde is a premium coffee grown in a Cloud Forest environment. The cool temperate Cloud Forest allows the coffee to ripen slowly, developing flavors that exhibit and represent quality.

Since 1989, Montana Coffee Traders has been working successfully with coffee farmers of the Monteverde region of Costa Rica. Our long term partnership with the Café Monteverde farmers affords a direct impact to improve coffee quality as well as a way for consumers to connect with their coffee farmers. The premium price Coffee Traders pays directly to the farmers has allowed these farmers to not only grow exceptional coffee, but give them the opportunity to expand their farms, businesses and knowledge in a rapidly changing economic environment.

This is our original Partnership coffee, dedicated to conservation, education, and social programs in and around the Monteverde Cloud Forest of Costa Rica. Coffee Traders donates a percentage back from annual sales to this coffee growing community for various improvements and projects that the community is working towards. In the most recent, this financial support has helped these growers invest in their wet mill, drying patios, new construction of raised beds, expand ecological farm tours, and the building of a coffee lab. The coffee lab has been instrumental in connecting the farmers to taste their quality coffee and for travelers to experience the unique coffee flavors the Monteverde region of Costa Rica offers. This close knit relationship that has developed with these growers is one of “Farm Direct”. The Farm Direct model encompasses a holistic approach to growing and sourcing coffee, along with negotiating fair purchase pricing. In brief, the main principle in this model is sustainability for both farmer and roaster. With the idea being ~ the farmer is making a sustainable living from growing quality coffee and selling it at a good price. The farmer is then able to invest back into his farm, while being secure and stable financially in the lean months. The investment the farmers can put back into their farms is representative of increased quality coffee and consistent production, which in turn is sustainable for the farmers roasting partners abroad.

We are roasting this coffee at one roast level where the flavors and nuances of the delicate processing technique that were used, are best represented.
