Coffee Story:

Our newest arrival from Sumatra is a “Crown Jewel” from Royal Coffee, Inc. (Oakland, CA). Coffees that make the distinction of a “Crown Jewel” are coffees not typical of the origin they are from, usually due to processing techniques, different coffee varietals planted and are a complete stand out. Koetintji Barokah sets itself apart from other Sumatrans because the beans were processed using the “fully washed” method and then dried on raised beds which are covered to protect the drying beans from the elements of the weather and promote even drying. Fully washed coffees are normal in many coffee growing areas, but certainly not typical in Sumatra, where the “wet-hulled” process is the common processing technique.

Koetintji Barokah Cooperative is the producer of this unique coffee. There are 140 members who cultivate on small family owned plots of land located around Mount Kerinci, the highest volcano in Indonesia. This area of Sumatra is well-known for ecotourism adventures and is recently gaining momentum as a notable region for coffee production. The cooperative works closely with producers to decrease forest encroachment. These producers intercrop their coffee with vegetables generally sold at the local market, which helps provide the farmers a consistent income throughout the year. Their farm management practices create a protective buffer for the Kerinci Seblat National Park, which encircles the entire Kerinci valley with unparalleled natural beauty and habitat for the Sumatran Tiger. This offer is incredibly special and the results in the cup are extraordinary and delicious! Now is the time…. Treat yourself!
