Coffee Story:

This coffee is sourced from an estate that we have become familiar with in the past year, the Hambela Coffee Estate. The farmers to accept credit for this outstanding example of a natural processed coffee, belong to the Bishan Fugu farmer association. The Bishan Fugu farmer association is one of three producing groups that have their coffee processed, sorted and finished for export at the Hambela Estate. Alaka and Benti Nenqa are the other two contributing farmer associations to Hambela. The goal in isolating the processing of these three growing groups, is to be able to identify distinct taste profiles that may be accentuated by these different sub regions in this area. In turn, this helps give the individual farmer associations credit and recognition for the high quality coffees they are producing.

The METAD Agricultural Development PLC (METAD) are the owners and operators of the Hambela Coffee Estate. The METAD group is a family owned agricultural development business, that has a long history beginning post WW2. After this war the Ethiopian Emperor gifted Muluemebet Emiru (the first African female pilot and family matriarch) with land in the Harrar and Sidama regions that soon after became the Hambela Coffee Estate. Presently, METAD is managed by Aman Adinew who returned to Ethiopia after many years working abroad, desiring to make a difference for his family and community. Through Aman’s role and forward thinking, METAD has strengthened the local community with employment and educational opportunities while also providing access to health care. METAD provides technical assistance at the farm level and also profit sharing programs to the farmer associations belonging to the Hambela Estate. The programs offered by METAD have exponentially improved the lives and communities of these farmers and their families.

This coffee is dry processed (aka ~ natural process), meaning the coffee cherry is harvested and sun dried with the fruit still intact to the outer surface of the bean. The coffee is then milled, removing the dried cherry and exposing the coffee seed. This process is responsible for the fruity character and is the original processing technique used since the beginning of time in birth place of coffee, Ethiopia.
