Fair Trade Coffee Organic Coffee

Coffee Story:

This coffee is sourced from small family owned farms organized around GRAPOS Cooperative. These producers are in the Southern Mexican state of Chiapas, near the towns of Union Juarez, Cacahoatan and Tapachula. A membership to this cooperative enables its members to gain access to financing, technical assistance and community development programs. The Fair Trade certification has helped the cooperative attain many goals and forward movement towards success.

Good governance training was provided to GRAPOS cooperative staff, to help in understanding the business side of the coffee supply chain, with regards to organizational capacity for financial accountability and strategic planning. Fair Trade premium dollars (by way of the sale of GRAPOS coffee), have helped seasonal workers and producers with farming challenges by supporting them with trainings specific to their needs. Premium dollars also help with necessary technical assistance at the farm level. This may include farmers receiving rust resistant coffee plant varieties that the coop’s nursery is growing, assistance with coffee tree renovation, fertilizer usage, implementation of soil conservation techniques, and shade tree management. These components of sustainable practices that are promoted by GRAPOS Fair Trade certification, has also become an important rural development objective. This has helped to encourage education overcoming low yields, land degradation and poverty.

This coffee is offered as both a light and a dark roast and is an excellent example of a quality coffee from a premier growing region. Refer to tasting notes above for a full description.
