Coffee Story:

Ethiopia, the birthplace of coffee, has a reputation for growing some of the highest quality coffees in the world. This coffee is grown in the region of Yirgacheffe, where high altitude, iron rich soil and a dry climate contribute to the success of this delicate, yet refined cup of black gold. Organically grown and Fair Trade certified, this coffee was sourced by small family owned farms, approximately 2 acres in size and was processed by the fully washed method (meaning the fruit, skin and pulp were removed before drying the bean). Aromatic floral notes with flavors of chocolate and stone fruit bring complexity to the cup.

The farmers behind this cup are members of the Adame Gorbota Cooperative. Membership provides for the processing, exporting and selling of these farmers coffee. Through the Fair Trade and organic certification, these farmers are paid the Fair Trade minimum, meaning it was purchased at an economically sustainable price. This payment structure shows the added values of certification (both FT and organic), which is ultimately important in these times of volatile commodities markets. Cooperative membership benefits also include agronomy support and social premium dollars coming back to the community for projects, such as investing in the local clinic and improving road infrastructure.
